Our History
Building a solid foundation in the community
Our Parish was founded in 1967 by Fr. James Wathen at the direction of Archbishop Thomas J. Toolen of the Diocese of Mobile-Birmingham on land purchased from Mrs. Antha Mae Grizzard. The Parish was established two year before the Diocese of Birmingham separated from the Diocese of Mobile. During this time, Huntsville was growing rapidly, and Catholic students needed more instructional space, so our building was built as a school. For the first several years the cafeteria tables had to be moved aside and chairs arranged every weekend for Mass. In 1980, our school was closed, and we began to support Holy Family School financially and with our students. The cafeteria then became a full-time church, and the rest of the building became classrooms for Religious Education, a parish hall, a kitchen, and parish office facilities. Joy Hall, to the left of the main entrance, and the gathering space you see as you enter the building, were added in 2006 as the first phase of a modernization of our facility. We have completed the last phase of renovations, which gives us dedicated storages spaces, meeting rooms, and administrative offices. This also completes the religious education wing of the building.
